Sugar Glider Sounds
Sugar gliders are generally not very vocal. The main noises you will hear on a daily basis are sounds coming from their toys and exercise wheel while they play. However, there are 4 distinct noises you may hear on occasion:
Barking: If you picture a 5” small puppy barking, you get a pretty good visual on this sound. Your glider is playful and wanting attention.
Crabbing: This sound can best be described as a mini 5” chainsaw idling. Usually made when a glider is disturbed or bothered.
Hissing: Your glider is scared and trying to scare off what is bothering it. This sound is usually accompanied with the glider gearing up on its hind legs and opening its arms wide to present itself as big as possible. This sound and reaction is rare, but most evident during the bonding phase. This sound is also accompanied with crabbing.
Sneezing: We have no idea what this sound means. We have only heard it while adult gliders are in the sleeping pouch and usually when they have joeys still in or just preparing to exit the mom’s pouch. It’s not a loud clear sneeze, just a soft and whispy sound that is similar to a faint sneeze.
